New 2017 Chevrolet Malibu at McLoughlin Chevrolet for Milwaukie, OR

Extending into 2017 ahead of the pack is Chevrolet's midsize Malibu sedan, and with a redesign fresh in its rearview just last year, this is one popular car! Changes this year include that the 2LT trim was dropped (and its features were distributed into the remaining models), and also that the Premier trim gained an original 9-speed automatic transmission, replacing the prior 8-speed automatic.  A ready stance greets onlookers with the Malibu, and the lines of the car could have been made by a strong sea-breeze. This is the vehicle for cruising at the beach in comfort and style, not just a capable commuter vehicle.

Under the Malibu's Hood

The L, LS and LT trims are standard with a 6-speed automatic and a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine that gets 160 horsepower and churns 184 pound-feet of torque. Every 2017 model will be front-wheel-drive. The Hybrid model contains a gas-electric system which determines when to send power from the electric motor, and derives power from the amalgamation of a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine and a battery pack. The recently released EPA-estimated fuel economy for the 2017 Malibu Hybrid is a commendable 46 combined (49 city/43 highway). The Hybrid engine gets to 182 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque. In Edmunds testing, the Malibu Hybrid took 7.5 seconds to get from 0 to 60 mph. Fuel economy for the 2017 non-hybrid version is EPA-rated at 30 mpg combined (27 city/36 highway), on the 1.5-L engine with an automatic 6-speed transmission. Standard on the Premier model is a 9-speed automatic and a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that manufactures 250 horsepower and spins 260 lb-ft of torque.

Design of Chevrolet Malibu

The 2017 Chevrolet Malibu sedan manifests itself in 5 central models: the L, LS, LT, Premier and the Hybrid. The base L comes standard with 16-inch steel wheels, cruise control, automatic headlights, keyless entry and ignition, and air-conditioning. The LS adds alloy wheels, 4G LTE connectivity with mobile Wi-Fi, Bluetooth streaming audio and the MyLink infotainment system, and then a rearview camera to boot. Owners will find heated mirrors on the LT trim, 17-inch wheels, LED daytime running lights, and many helpful items! Standard on the Hybrid is dual-zone automatic climate control and an electronic parking brake. Both the LT and Hybrid can access the Convenience and Technology package, and the Premier gets all of these accoutrements and then adds in more with 18-inch wheels, LED taillights, chrome exterior trim, a heated steering wheel, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a navigation system. Otherwise, in the interior, there is an optional, either 7- or 8-inch MyLink touchscreen that is cleverly ensconced within a dashboard inset, and also has Apple CarPlay / Android Auto smartphone integration with 4G Wi-Fi. The Hybrid trunk is a substantial 11.6 cubic feet, otherwise a 15.8 cubic foot trunk is within all other models and will store your items perfectly!

What is the fuel efficiency rating for the 2017 Malibu Hybrid version?

The Malibu Hybrid is rated at an estimated 49 mpg city and 43 mpg highway with the 1.8-liter hybrid engine fitted with an automatic transmission.
